Publishing An e-Journal

Brian Kelly ran a workshop session on Publishing An e-Journal as part of his STIMULATE 2001 workshop. The workshop session took place on Monday 8th December 2001 from 10:00-13:00.

Abstract

This half-day workshop is aimed at organisations and individuals who wish to produce their own Web magazine or e-Journal, either for in-house use or for the general public, or who wish to further develop an existing one. It covers a number of issues associated with publishing Web magazines and e-Journals including:

The role of A Web Magazine: what is a Web magazine? What is the difference between a Web magazine and an e-Journal? How do they differ from Web sites?
The Reader's View: What features can we provide for the readers?
The Author's View: How can we support the authors and contributors?
The Publisher's Perspective: What technologies and architectures can be used to provide a Web magazine?
The Business Case: How can we fund our publication?

The workshop consists of a mixture of presentations, demonstrations and group exercises.

Aims

The aims of the workshop session are to:

Discuss the roles of electronic publications, their advantages and disadvantages, funding issues, technical architectures and evaluation of their usability and effectiveness.
Review a variety of electronic publications in order to identify key features of successful electronic publications.

Target Audience

The workshop is intended primarily for members of services such as libraries, educational institutions, public sector organisations, etc. who are considering setting up an electronic publication or have an existing electronic publication which they wish to develop further.

Format

The workshop will consist of a mixture of presentations, group discussion and hands-on exercises.
