Introduction

This document outlines possible approaches to automatically generating metadata about an eprint as it is deposited into a repository.

It is assumed that the eprint being deposited has not been made publically available elsewhere - i.e. it is being deposited as part of the process of making it available. IN cases where the eprint has been made publically available it may have already been assigned an identifier (a DOI or a URL) and it may be possible for software to automatically resolve that identifier in order to access pre-existing metadata about the eprint (for example using CrossRef or Connotea).
