Providing a Repository for Open-access Subject-Presented Eprints Online (Prospero)

The Prospero Project, a collaboration between SHERPA and EDINA, is currently in a preparatory phase, running over five months (March-July 2006) to scope a JISC-funded open access (OA) repository of research papers to support UK researchers and academic institutions without current access to an institutional repository (IR).

This work to looking towards a main phase of up to three years to build and deploy the Prospero service.

EThOS Workshop Thursday 20th July 2006, Glasgow

The JISC/CURL Electronic Theses Online Service (EThOS) project is holding on a workshop on 20th July in Glasgow: http://www.ethos.ac.uk.

The EThOS project is developing a prototype web-based service through which users can find details of a wide range of UK theses and download the full text directly to their computers. This will have significant implications for the future delivery model of full text theses within the UK HE community.

This event is based on the workshop held in Cardiff on 21st February 2006. A final event will be held in London in early September. Intended audience

This event will be highly relevant for administrative, academic and library staff involved in the production, administration and storage of theses.

Programme

The workshop will cover:

  • The IPR issues to be considered
  • The Institutional Toolkit being created to help HEIs with all aspects of developing an eTheses service
  • The relationship between EThOS and the IRIScotland Project
  • What EThOS will offer as a service and how it will balance Open Access with Service Viability.

Venue and date

The workshop will take place at Glasgow University in the Business School Lecture Theatre from 11am to 4pm on Thursday 20th July.

OAIS as a reference model for repositories: an evaluation

The Digital Repositories Programme Support team have produced a report entitled "OAIS as a reference model for repositories : an evaluation". The report evaluates the applicability of OAIS across different types of repositories. A draft for comment is now available and feedback on this report is welcome.

Research Councils UK publishes updated position statement on access to research outputs

This week, the Research Councils UK Executive Group have published an updated position statement on access to research outputs. Available from http://www.rcuk.ac.uk/access/ the statement "reaffirms the Research Councils' commitment to the guiding principles that publicly funded research must be made available and accessible for public examination as rapidly as practical; published research outputs should be effectively peer-reviewed; this must be a cost effective use of public funds; and outputs must be preserved and remain accessible for future generations".
