The Problem:
Metadata plays an important role in many digital library applications.
However, as we know from our experiences with HTML resources authors and developers
may not implement appropriate procedures which ensure that resources comply with
standards - in many cases checking may be limited to visual inspection using a
small number of browsers. Clearly this approach will be ineffective with metadata
embedded in HTML resources, since the metadata is not displayed. There is
therefore a clear need to develop techniques for metadata validation.

A Simple Approach:
DCdot is a Web-based tool which can be used for
creating and managing Dublin Core metadata. DCdot can also be used to carry out
simple validation of Dublin Core embedded in HTML resources.
However DCdot has several limitations:
- It only performs basic validation
- It was not designed primarily as a validation tool.

Use of an RDF Validator
We have experimented with use of W3C's RDF validator. Although that has
some benefits, the tool validates RDF, and so is not aware of the Dublin Core
application profile. |

An Approach To Validation Based on XSLT
We have developed an approach based on use of XSLT . |
