Biography

Talat joined UKOLN in September 2008. His role is to support and co-ordinate the implementation and continued development of the various Dublin Core Application Profiles (DCAPs) that have been created through JISC funding for different types of repository content. The intention is to encourage interoperability between different resource types through the adoption of appropriate standards where it may be of practical benefit to the repository community. Working with repository managers and the developers of the major repository platforms, the project aims to assess the feasibility of complex metadata models in institutional repositories in terms of acquiring and maintaining high quality metadata, as well as the potential for developing new services on the basis of a common core metadata set for application profiles.

Before joining UKOLN, Talat worked as Repository Advisor at Aberystwyth University, where he was responsible for developing and maintaining the university's research repository CADAIR and for advocacy work both within the institution and externally. In addition to the acquisition of substantial new research content and promoting self-archiving, he negotiated the mandatory deposit of research theses, the ingest of RAE submissions and the transfer of research content from the merger with IGER (the Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research). He worked with senior management towards a proposal for the adoption of a Current Research Information System (CRIS) to co-ordinate all research activity across the university.

Talat previously worked as a library assistant in Aberystwyth and had responsibility for supporting distance learners in the Department of Information Studies. He completed his PhD in the Department of Welsh during this time.
