ISAD(G) (Second Edition) to RSLP CD Schema Mapping

[UKOLN logo]

Note: This document should be read in conjunction with the earlier note on the relationship between ISAD(G) and the RSLP CLD schema.

This document supercedes the earlier draft of 21 June 2001

A separate EAD to RSLP CD mapping is available.

ISAD(G) Second Edition is described at http://www.hmc.gov.uk/icacds/eng/ISAD(G).pdf

The RSLP CD Schema is described at http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/metadata/rslp/schema/

ISAD(G) includes

The RSLP CD schema can be used to describe either a collection or a catalogue (a collection of metadata records). The tables below provide two mappings, firstly for the description of the collection, secondly for the description of the ISAD(G) catalogue/finding aid.

In each case, the RSLP CD "record" consists of a set of related resource descriptions: descriptions of the Collection (or Catalogue), the Location of the Collection, the Collection of the Collection, the Owner of the Collection, and the Administrator of the Location.

In the right hand column of the table below, the token in brackets (e.g. [Collection]) indicates the resource and the second, for convenience in the form of an XML QName (e.g. dc:title), indicates the name of the property of that resource. The same named property may occur in association with more than one resource e.g. both the Collection and the Location may have a dc:title property.

The namespace prefixes used in the XML QNames are assumed to be associated with XML namespace names as follows:

There is no machine-readable syntax directly associated with ISAD(G) (though an ISAD(G) description can easily be encoded using the EAD SGML/XML DTD); and although the RSLP CD properties are represented as XML QNames, the mapping is intended to be neutral on the form in which an RSLP collection description is represented.

Description of collection

ISAD(G) 2nd Edition RSLP CD Note

311 Reference Code

[Collection] dc:identifier

312 Title

[Collection] dc:title

313 Dates
[creation]

[Collection] rslpcd:contentsDateRange

and

[Collection] dcterms:temporal

313 Dates
[accumulation]

[Collection] rslpcd:accumulationDateRange

314 Level of description

[No correspondence.]

Could be used as part of an archive-specific collection type list
i.e. as value of [Collection] dc:type,
but this is not part of the CLDT type list.

315 Extent and medium of unit of description (quantity, bulk or size)

[Collection] dc:format

321 Name of creator
[personal name]

[Collector] vcard:fn

and

[Collection] rslpcd:agentName

In ISAD(G), this is "the name of the organization(s) or the individual(s) responsible for the creation, accumulation and maintenance of the records in the unit of description". In most cases, this will correspond to the the RSLP CD concept of the Collector, but there may be some cases where it does not.

321 Name of creator
[corporate name]

[Collector] vcard:org

322 Administrative/Biographical History

[Collector] rslpcd:agentHistory

In ISAD(G), this is the history/biography of the creator of the records/items which form the archive. In many cases, this will correspond to the the RSLP CD concept of the Collector, but there may be some cases where it does not.

[Collection] rslpcd:custodialHistory

324 Immediate source of acquisition or transfer

[Collection] rslpcd:custodialHistory

332 Appraisal, destruction and scheduling information

[Collection] rslpcd:custodialHistory

333 Accruals

[Collection] rslpcd:accrualStatus

The RSLP CD schema suggests a convention for the value of this property; ISAD(G) does not constrain the content of the element.

334 System of arrangement

[No correspondence]

Could be "dumbed-down" to [Collection] dc:description

341 Conditions governing access

[Collection] rslpcd:accessControl

The scope of the ISAD(G) element includes description of legal status. If that part of the element is separately identifiable, it could be mapped to [Collection] rslpcd:legalStatus

342 Conditions governing reproduction

[Collection] rslpcd:accessControl

343 Language/scripts of material

[Collection] dc:language

344 Physical characteristics and technical requirements

[Collection] dc:format

345 Finding aids

[Collection] rslpcd:hasDescription

[No correspondence]

352 Existence and location of copies

[No correspondence]

353 Related units of description

[Collection] rslpcd:hasAssociation

354 Publication note

[Collection] rslpcd:hasPublication

361 Note

[Collection] rslpcd:note

[Collection] dc:type
