Medical Subject headings (MeSH)

MeSH is the National Library of Medicine's (NLM) controlled vocabulary thesaurus. The MeSH thesaurus is used by NLM for indexing articles from the world's leading biomedical journals for the MEDLINE database and in Index Medicus, a monthly guide to articles from more than 3,400 journals. It is also used for other NLM produced databases that include cataloguing of books, documents and audiovisual materials acquired by the library.

Medical Subject headings Section staff continually revise and update the MeSH vocabulary. New terms are evaluated as they appear in the scientific literature or in emerging areas of research and added to the set. MeSH, in machine-readable form, is provided at no charge via electronic means. It is also available in several printed forms.
