Group 2a afternoon discussion
Welcome to discussion group 2A
In your discussion group identify:
- Areas in which collaborative and mobile technologies could be used within your organisation:
- The types of technologies required
- Potential problem areas
- The requirements for successful deployment
Keep a note of your conclusions in this Wiki.
Summary
One main area that libraries would talk to their patrons is in reader development.
Perhaps telling them that a new book is now in the library by their favourite author.
The back office technology will soon be available ... how can I use this.
Maybe RSS could be the technology for this.
Another area is using podcasting to load recorded lectures onto our web site.
Another key opportunity is to automate issuing of emergency messages such as
lecture cancellations using SMS.
Discussion lists for community of practise ( e.g. Archives Sector SW) could be
developed to overcome the distance facing practitioners and restricting contact.
Reflective journals could be developed using BLOGs
to serve a similar purpose. Confidentiality could be an issue. However they
could also be used for consultation. Integrating Environments could be used to give a voting facility.

On the subject of Podcasting please note that two brief talks had been prepared
for the workshop which were not give due to lack of time. However the slides are available:
On the subject of RSS the following slides are available:
Note that a recording of the talk is also availabl. This recording illustrates
some of the difficulties in recording talks:
- Speaker moving away from microphone
- Speaker telling jokes which will be lost for those listening to the talk
- The need to enhance the quality of the reecording.
