What is the consultation about?

The first consultation on the issue of harmonising the UK and US MARC (now MARC21)   formats took place in 1995. At that time, the decision was made to to avoid further divergence and to pursue partial harmonisation,  and further consultations have led to the introduction of new fields. The next stage of harmonisation involves changes which will have a greater impact on users. The British Library commissioned the BIC Bibliographic Standards Technical Subgroup to make a report on the changes and what they mean for users; this report forms the heart of the current consultation. The report is being issued along with a covering letter and a questionnaire, with the closing date for replies being 31 October 2000.
