Project description

as of 4th January 1996

Introduction

The purpose of this project is to undertake the development and implementation work in electronic publishing for a journal with
  • a range of particular problems of representation
  • a readership and range of authors unfamiliar with electronic publishing , and
  • edited by a full-time academic from his normal place of work

Description

The objectives of this project are
  • to shift from conventional to parallel publishing of a scholarly journal (Transactions) spanning the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences produced outside a commercial publishing house by a scholarly society (Royal Geographical Society-Institute of British Geographers (RGS-IBG)).
  • to preserve page fidelity in the electronic format
  • to preserve complex diagrams in the electronic format
  • to facilitate electronic intra- and inter-journal cross referencing on a specified range of features
  • to explore the possibilities of and, if possible, to build in personalised cross-referencing
  • to access the archives of the journal for reproduction in electronic form
  • to explore the possibilities for - but not to do any development work on - electronic refereeing
  • to develop and assess a variety of deliverables including archive material for a target community with reasonable access to hardware but limited awareness of the possibilities of electronic formats
  • to transfer the publication press to similar and related journals

Schedule

The project is financed from October 1995 but will really get under way with the appointment of 2 Research Assistants (one in QMW and one in Nottingham) from the beginning of January 1996.

The project is due to be completed by the end of 1997

Partners

This project is being undertaken by a consortium consisting of the Department of Geography, Queen Mary and Westfield College; the Electronic Publishing Research Group (EPRG) in the Department of Computer Science, University of Nottingham, and the Editor of the Transactions of the Institute of British Geographers.
