1 A fictional archaeological example

The records, below, illustrate the way in which Dublin Core might be used to describe typical resources from the humanities. Comments are interspersed with the metadata in order to make the examples more meaningful to the casual reader. Further examples, covering the wider range of disciplines and media types examined during the course of the AHDS/UKOLN workshop series are available from the AHDS's Web pages (AHDS 1997).

DC.subject archaeology, excavation, urban, Charles Dickens
Here, a set of general terms are given, along with controlled vocabulary from the Thesaurus of Monument Types (TMT). Should it prove feasible to link directly into an online version of TMT, the increasingly hierarchical expression given above would not be necessary, as the software would be capable of establishing the relationship between 'detached house' and the generic 'dwelling'.

DC. subject TMT dwelling, house, detached house
In any display to the user, some form of look-up against the SCHEME registry would be required in order to translate the (stored) TMT into the (displayed) Thesaurus of Monument Types, and to provide access either to an on-line browsable version or to a bibliographic citation.

DC.description.short Excavations undertaken in advance of development examined the remains of a Victorian domestic dwelling, and uncovered previously unexpected Roman remains preserved beneath the cellar. The house is reputed to be the childhood home of author Charles Dickens.
The TYPE, short, displayed in the element name is actually unnecessary here, as there is no long to distinguish it from.

He meets a young thief called the Artful Dodger who introduces him to Fagin - leader and teacher of a gang of youthful pickpockets.
