Description of Document: This document describes the draft schema for collection-level description that is being developed by the NISO Metasearch Initiative Task Group 2. It is based closely on the Dublin Core Collection Description Application Profile, developed by the Dublin Core Collection Description Working Group.

Introduction

Functional Requirements of the NISO Metasearch Collection Description Schema

The aim is that the NISO Metasearch Collection Description schema should support:

The Dublin Core Collection Description Application Profile (DC CD AP)

This schema is based closely on the Dublin Core Collection Description Application Profile (DC CD AP) [1] which is being developed by the Dubin Core Collection Description Working Group.

As a DC Application Profile, the DC CD AP is based on the "meta-model" described by the DCMI Abstract Model [2]: i.e. it specifies the properties that are used to describe a collection, and how those properties are deployed, including any constraints on their values i.e, any classes to be used as encoding schemes. DC metadata descriptions make use of URI references to refer to properties and classes, so all properties and classes required by the DC CD AP must be assigned URI references.

Individual collection descriptions conforming to the DC CD AP will also conform to the statement-based model described by the DCMI Abstract Model.

The DC CD AP Data Model

The DC CD AP is based on an application data model which is derived from that described in An Analytical Model of Collections and their Catalogues [3]. It differs from that model in adding a new entity type, Service.

E-R model

In the Analytic Model relationships may carry attributes; in the DC CD AP, relationships are represented as simple properties and do not themselves carry attributes, so some of the expressivity of the model is lost in the metadata schema.

This version of the DC CD AP describes the use of properties to represent attributes of the collection and relationships between the collection and other entities. It does not describe how to represent properties of other entities in the model.

Differences between the NISO MI CD Schema and the DC CD AP

At the time of writing (2005-03-19), the NISO MI CD Schema differs from the DC CD AP (version 2005-03-19) in the following:

Vocabularies/Namespaces used

Vocabulary Name URI Prefix
The Dublin Core Metadata Element Set, v1.1 http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/ dc
Dublin Core Terms http://purl.org/dc/terms/ dcterms
MARC Relator Codes http://www.loc.gov/marc.relators/
marcrel
Collection Description Terms http://example.org/cld/terms#
[temporary URI, final URI to be confirmed]
cld
General Description Terms http://example.org/gen/terms#
[temporary URI, final URI to be confirmed]
gen
Collection Type Vocabulary Terms http://example.org/cld/type#
[temporary URI, final URI to be confirmed]
cldtype

Please note that where terms have Qualified Names with the prefixes gen, cld and cldtype, this indicates that those terms have not yet been assigned persistent URIs. Until such persistent URIs are assigned, by DCMI or by some other naming authority, these terms should be considered to be unstable and should not be referenced in metadata descriptions, except as part of the evaluation/testing of this profile.

Collection Properties

Shaded entries in the tables below indicate that either the semantics or the usage (e.g. labels, optionality, cardinality, use of Encoding Schemes) of a metadata element have been optimised/localised by this Application Profile.

Identifier [dc:identifier]

Comments

A collection identifier must be a URI, and the use of a URI scheme that has been registered with IANA is preferred.

Completeness [cld:completeness]

Identifier http://example.org/cld/terms#completeness
Name completeness
Label Completeness
Defined By Collection Description Terms
http://example.org/cld/terms#
Definition

A specification of the depth of a collection in relation to its subject field. In other words, completeness indicates how the number of items in the collection in a specified subject field compares with the total body of published items in that subject field.

Comments

Completeness is mainly applicable to collections consisting of published (scientific) resources. Estimate of the total body of published items in any area (such as books about chess) is to some extent subjective; nevertheless e.g. national collection description initiatives in Czech Republic and Finland have chosen to include Completeness in their metadata element sets.

It is strongly recommended that the value of this property is specified as a Conspectus Level.

A free text value for the property may be used.

By default, the described collection should have just one subject area. If the subject scope of the collection is broad, the collection breadth (the degree of completeness of a collection in relation to its subject scope) should be the same in all subject fields. This is the case in e.g. the national bibliographic collections maintained by the national libraries.
