Theme for this year's event

"In the age of Google, libraries are trying to find their space as 24-hour providers of information to communities". [Nick Rogarty, Executive Director, Open eBook Forum (OeBF) quoted in: "Under the cover story" by Jim McClellan, The Guardian (Online), 29 January 2004. [http://www.guardian.co.uk/online]

With the People's Network ICT infrastructure now fully in place, and web sites serving as shop windows to library services, the focus is now on the development of quality e-content and e-services.

The Framework for the Future Report (DCMS, February 2003) identifies 'digital citizenship' as a key activity for public libraries over the next ten year, and this means providing access to services people will use and value.

This event offers the chance to discover what other library authorities are doing in terms of building digital content and electronic services. You will also hear what some of the key players outside the public library have to say on topics such as Content Management Systems, award winning websites, and wireless access in libraries.

Who should attend?

Staff with an interest in, or responsibility for, the management and development of public library web sites and web-based services.

The event aims to be informal and practical. It provides an opportunity to share experiences with colleagues, and discuss some of the key networking issues.

Preliminary programme

[Topics for papers and full programme to be confirmed]

Plus choice of break-out sessions e.g. on how to use metadata, and an update on ebook and e-audio activities in public libraries.
