Session 3 - Breakout groups Part I

1. Identifying priority research areas

Current research activities

  • Roundtable on current research activities
  • Research activity by country, repository type, underlying purpose (e.g., open-access, institutional asset management, re-use of learning objects)

How does repository research fit with the wider digital library research agenda? Or with the development of institutional management systems?

Identifying priority areas for research and development (brainstorming)

  • Identify gaps
  • What are the most important repository topics that require more research and development?

Collaborative research activities

  • What potential is there for collaboration in research? Does the 'national' funding of repository research and development limit the scope for sharing experiences or working together? What should be the role of the DELOS Network of Excellence?

2. Developing a repository reference model

What do we mean by ‘repositories’? Defining scope, exploring a typology of repositories.

Where do repositories fit in relation to other services? Is a repository typically a component of other services?

Identifying common services for a repository reference model

  • are there typical use cases
  • can we identify common functionality across repositories

Can these be characterised as ‘services’?

How far are common services being addressed?

What are the gaps in available service provision?

3. Cultural and organisational issues for federated repositories

Barriers to interoperability

Service provider problems (e.g., http://kathagedorn.com/SP_issues.html)

  • How do service providers find new repositories? How do they know whether a repository is up-to-date and is still being maintained? How can they avoid duplication when harvesting from other aggregator services?
  • How can service providers build good quality services with incomplete or indifferent metadata? Would the use of richer metadata schemas help? How does a service provider ensure some level of metadata consistency at the repository (data provider) level?

Quality assurance and certification

  • Preservation repositories may need some form of certification, e.g. based on the basic criteria proposed by the OAIS Reference Model, enhanced by the attributes of 'trusted repositories' identified in by an OCLC/RLG report published in 2002. Current RLG/NARA working group trying to produce certification criteria and process. Would a certification (or quality assurance) process be useful for other types of repository or aggregator service? If so what would be the most important criteria?
