Summary

This talk will describe the potential benefits which can be gained from use of the virtual spaces provided by a variety of social Web services such as social networking services and social bookmarking services as well as blogs and wikis.

The talk will illustrate ways in which libraries are making use of such services and how such services may provide an effective return on investment, especially for public sector organisations with limited technical expertise or budget. The potential risks of use of such services will also be acknowledged and a risk management framework for making effective use of such services will be described.

Biographical Details

Brian Kelly works for UKOLN, a national centre of expertise in digital information management based at the University of Bath, which is funded by the JISC and the MLA. Brian is an adviser on Web standards, developments and best practices and has a particular interest in best practices for exploiting Web 2.0 and the Social Web. Brian was the Information World Review's Information Professional of the Year for 2007-8.
