Title
Open Standards - the Solution to Interoperability?
Speaker
Brian Kelly, UKOLN
Abstract
Open standards have an important role to play in helping to ensure that networked services are widely accessible and interoperable. However the selection and use of open standards is not always easy - open standards may fail to gain acceptance in the marketplace; may have signification flaws; may fail to provide services and features which the user community expects or may be difficult or expensive to implement.
However, rather than abandoning a commitment in light of such difficulties, UKOLN has developed a contextual approach to the selection and use of open standards for JISC's development programmes.
This presentation will outline the model which has been developed and explore the potential for this approach to be deployed as part of an institutions's development activities and not just within a JISC content.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this session participants will:
  • Have gained an understanding of the approach to open standards which UKOLN has developed for the JISC.
  • Be aware of support materials which are freely available for use by others.
  • Be in a position to judge the relevance of this approach for deployment within the participant's own institution.
