B7: What's the Point of Having Developers in a Web 2.0 World?

With the ever-increasing quality of third-party tools lowering the barriers for enthusiasts to provide Web-based services for their teams and departments, what's the point in having an insitutional Web development team?

Tools, tools, tools!

Ning, Yahoo! Pipes, Flickr, del.icio.us, custom Google search. Is there anything your web team or department provides that couldn't be done elsewhere or by other people? There must be, but are those the things we spend the most time on? It's questions like these that we'd like to discuss!

We're tempted to broaden the topic a bit to "what's the point of having a web team at all in a web2.0 world?" so, designers, maintainers, editors, developers and everything! Would there be any problem with this do you think? Or would you like it to remain more focussed?

Doesn't sound great, although I guess it depends on what you're trying to achieve. Sounds like you need more presenter buy-in!

Hi Phil - I previous year's we've set up wiki areas for such note-taking. However use of hem has been rather patchy. I did wonder whether this year we should just suggest that you use a forum on this Ning area.

I'd like to have somewhere online to collect notes, any suggestions? Maybe some wiki or communal note-taking place?
