Open discussion on whether this is a good idea - suggestion that it might make sense to kick off regional groups again.
by Brian Kelly at 7/24/2008 9:08:21 AM
Open Data - is this going to be something that we need to do more of. Feelings that the powers that be haven't realised that this is a good idea yet. One option is to do it without telling anyone - possible risks of doing this. Paul Walk suggests opening up calendar data. There are dangers of just letting stuff go out there. Risk assessment.
by Brian Kelly at 7/24/2008 9:17:14 AM
Mike Ellis suggests making press and marketing data available because it is there to be consumed. Rss used internally too. What about accessibility issues?
by Brian Kelly at 7/24/2008 9:18:59 AM
Good point about Accessibility Brian, but had advice from Sal Cooke at TechDis that "rttttteasonable adjustment" does not necessarily mean "technological" adjustment
by Alison Smyth at 7/24/2008 9:19:39 AM
The winner of the competition is collaborative cross-institutional user-generated interactive mashup thing !!!
by Brian Kelly at 7/24/2008 9:22:53 AM
Singing during a spoken word/technology heavy event is a very innovative thing to do - outside the acceptable context of pub/drunken stagger homewards, that is. It communicates to the assembly in a very different, emotive way. Well done!
by Paul Milne at 7/24/2008 10:02:11 AM
But I did like the train timetable mashup as well, from a purely personal point of view.
by Paul Milne at 7/24/2008 10:02:46 AM
Earwigging in via the video feed and scribblive. This is great for hangers on who didn't pay to attend!
by Iain Middleton at 7/24/2008 10:04:55 AM
morning Iain
by mikewhyment at 7/24/2008 10:11:31 AM
really challenging us Ewan
by DIH at 7/24/2008 10:19:05 AM
Crikey, that was a rather depressing response: no-one there sees students in the process of learning?
by PeteJ at 7/24/2008 10:26:39 AM
lol - going to a *disco*!
by andypowe11 at 7/24/2008 10:27:10 AM
'friend' doesn't mean 'friend' anymore?
by andypowe11 at 7/24/2008 10:27:39 AM
interesting point about breaking up the institution into managable chunks but surely Fb is massive but people partition it into social networks of their own
by andypowe11 at 7/24/2008 10:30:41 AM
oops :-0
by andypowe11 at 7/24/2008 10:31:43 AM
we are hoping to fund a couple of projects this year looking at issues around online identity and the issues people need to think about
by andypowe11 at 7/24/2008 10:34:19 AM
i own "andypowe11.net" but not "andypowell.com" because guitarist of wishbone ash has same name - asked about price but prohibitive
by andypowe11 at 7/24/2008 10:35:10 AM
have often wondered about buying domain names for my kids - but feels a bit geeky
by andypowe11 at 7/24/2008 10:35:37 AM
@andypowe11 Was just about to say that I would like to say something on that point (managing identity) but can't right now :-)
by PeteJ at 7/24/2008 10:35:44 AM
by andypowe11 at 7/24/2008 10:38:51 AM

*Strokes his ancient cheap Nokia*
by PeteJ at 7/24/2008 10:41:34 AM

by andypowe11 at 7/24/2008 10:42:41 AM
I love it!
by helennewnham at 7/24/2008 10:44:13 AM

by PeteJ at 7/24/2008 10:45:38 AM

by andypowe11 at 7/24/2008 10:47:57 AM
i've always wondered if the guy driving the little truck was a plant?
by andypowe11 at 7/24/2008 10:49:15 AM

Haha! Xpost!
by PeteJ at 7/24/2008 10:56:56 AM
How do you keep up with where the new toys are?
by krissf at 7/24/2008 10:57:20 AM
well learning and research surely - unis have a research mission as well as a learning and teaching mission ??
by andypowe11 at 7/24/2008 10:58:09 AM
Yes, just keeping up with new technology requires resources (people). Getting our Uni's to recognise this is really important.
by helennewnham at 7/24/2008 10:59:31 AM
good stuff
by andypowe11 at 7/24/2008 10:59:33 AM
Does anyone know if that talk is going to be available on YouTube or somewhere? He's really good - I want to show my colleagues.
by helennewnham at 7/24/2008 10:59:53 AM
There's a video being recorded so it must be available from somewhere
by krissf at 7/24/2008 11:00:25 AM
by andypowe11 at 7/24/2008 11:02:16 AM
Hmm. Good point about tribal conservatism
by PeteJ at 7/24/2008 11:02:28 AM
Really enjoyed Ewan's talk; thought-provoking and challenging but he's talking to the converted (I hope). The cultural challenge within the university as he noted at the beginning is immense. Lecturers like Bb because it saves them time/effort to do what they have always done - push information. They're scared seriously about collaborative workspaces because they may be challenged - even from outside the institution. There's too much "control" still embedded into learning - now there's the challenge
by DIH at 7/24/2008 11:04:13 AM
by andypowe11 at 7/24/2008 11:07:04 AM

I'm only here to correct @briankelly 's spelling.
by PeteJ at 7/24/2008 11:13:14 AM
just think of the money you're saving your institution by not going up there..
by helennewnham at 7/24/2008 11:13:21 AM
brian is very open with his mistakes! :-) he makes them all the while on his blog
by andypowe11 at 7/24/2008 11:14:06 AM

by Alison Smyth at 7/24/2008 11:17:07 AM
feedback on stream and backchat - very good (with minor note about low volume on audio)
by andypowe11 at 7/24/2008 11:17:22 AM
Best lecture theater EVER
by Paul Milne at 7/24/2008 11:17:37 AM
I'd second that Andy - grest stream quality (maybe speakers need reminding to keep close to mic)
by helennewnham at 7/24/2008 11:19:02 AM
the video feed was great - good camera/screen coordination, and only a minor problem with audio volume - aw, it just went off! Great to earwig on some of the sessions. See ya'll.
