Abstract

This session will cover issues concerning the Web for PR and Marketing groups in the UK HE and FE communities.

The seminar will begin by looking at the approaches taken to the design of UK University home pages. Participants will be asked for their views on the key elements of an effective home page. The seminar will then broaden the discussion by looking at the mistakes which can be made when designing your institutional home page.

Having addressed a number of design issues the seminar will then look at one means of funding a Web service - use of Web advertising. Participants will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of Web advertising. A report on a recent JISC-funded study on Advertising on JANET will be given.

The seminar will conclude by describing a number of techniques which can be used to monitor and evaluate our own institutional Web site and will describe techniques which will enable use to make comparisons with the rest of the community.
