Report on Digital Libraries '94

The future

Digital Libraries '94 was the first in a series of conferences. Digital Libraries '95 and '96 are already scheduled for San Antonio and St Louis respectively. It would be strategic to increase the British presence and involvement in these conferences.

The NSF funding in particular and the Clinton/Gore initiatives in general will mean a large US effort in this field. It is important that British researchers collaborate with and contribute to the work rather than being marginalised. Furthermore, a link is needed between the CEC Information Engineering programme and the US Digital Libraries programme. Britain is well placed to provide such a link.

I propose the setting up of a Digital Libraries Special Interest Group which I am prepared to lead and coordinate. Such a group would be a relatively informal (probably email-based) way of disseminating information to interested sites in Britain.
