Anglo-Nordic Seminar on Networking 1996
Session 4: National and Local Strategies Regarding Digital Libraries

Libraries and computer centres

Terje Hviseth
Luleå University Library, Sweden

During the last years, there has been a tendency in universities, specially in the UK and the US, to merge libraries and computer centres. This has not been the case in Scandinavia. Lulee University is so far the only known example of a merged library and computer centre. Effective as from 1st July this year, the director of the library is also responsible for the computer centre.

The presentation will give a short overview of Lulee University, and a more detailed description of the organisation of the library and the computer centre. The author will discuss the possible advantages of having librarians and computer specialists working together in projects as creating Intranet, developing the Electronic Library, giving training courses in Internet, etc. Finally the problems of merging two organisations with different cultures, different organisation models, different representation regarding male and female employees and different funding systems will be presented.
