On 5 February 2004, the Joint Information Systems Committee and the eScience Core Programme announced the award of £1.3 million a year for a UK Digital Curation Centre based in the UK. Scientists and researchers across the UK generate increasingly vast amounts of digital data, with further investment in digitisation and purchase of digital content and information. The scientific record and the documentary heritage created in digital form are at risk from technology obsolescence, from the fragility of digital media, and from lack of the basics of good practice, such as adequate documentation for the data.
Working with other practitioners, the Digital Curation Centre will support UK institutions who store, manage and preserve these data to help ensure their enhancement and their continuing long-term use. The purpose of our centre is to provide a national focus for research and development into curation issues and to promote expertise and good practice, both national and international, for the management of all research outputs in digital format.
The DCC's expertise is spread broadly across the UK academic community. The following partners contribute to the core activities of the Centre and make up the DCC Consortium:
The DCC is funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC), an independent advisory body that works with further and higher education establishments, and the e-Science core programme.
The passage from setup phase to operational status was marked by a formal launch that gathered together supporters and experts from across the UK and beyond. For details about speakers, the programme and more, please visit the launch pages on the DCC Portal.
The DCC Web Portal The Digital Curation Centre relaunched its website on 31 May 2005. The site features a much improved design and organisation structure, as well as new features such as an events calendar and RSS feeds.
