ROADS Progress Report - UKOLN

For ROADS Executive Meeting, Library Meeting Room, Level 4, Bath University Library, 15 July 1997.

UKOLN The UK Office for Library and Information Networking.

Work on ROADS at UKOLN has been in the following areas:

Interoperability issues:

MD has periodically updated the ROADS template registry <URL:http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/roads/templates/> and has incorporated some comments and additions. MD is also planning a meeting with subject services to discuss a forthcoming document on cataloguing rules.

MD has added more mappings to the mapping/crosswalk pages <URL:http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/metadata/interoperability/>. This includes a new Dublin Core to UNIMARC mapping produced by MD for the BIBLINK project. <URL:http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/metadata/interoperability/dc_unimarc.html>

New ROADS databases:

AP has created two new ROADS databases using PROJECT templates:

Both are accessible via the UKOLN ROADS page: <URL:http://roads.ukoln.ac.uk/>

Tools:

AP has written a tool to convert ROADS records into GILS records suitable for loading into Zebra. Both SOSIG and OMNI have showed an interest in this.

AP has also investigated serving ROADS databases through Z39.50 using Isite and Jon Knight's ZEXI script.

For both of these tools, see: <http://roads.ukoln.ac.uk/cgi-bin/egwcgi/egwirtcl/targets.egw>

DC-dot, the Dublin Core creation utility developed by AP, is being used by RUDI to create SOIF records which will then be converted and embedded into their Web pages using SSI script (based on work done at UKOLN).

Meetings attended:

RH attended the 4th Dublin Core Workshop, Canberra, Australia, 3-5 March 1997. An account of the workshop can be found at: <URL:http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/metadata/resources/dc4-notes.html>.

MD attended the Working Meeting on Electronic Records Research held in Pittsburgh, PA, 29-31 May 1997. The meeting primarily concerned the management of electronic records but a significant amount of the workshop discussion was concerned with what types of metadata are necessary for the long-term management of electronic records and methods of capturing this metadata from archival systems.

LD chaired, and RH and AP delivered papers at the Metadata: what is it? seminar held at Church House Conference Centre, London, on the 18 June 1997. The slides for the presentations are on the Web and are available from: <URL:http://www.ukoln.ac.uk/metadata/presentations/>

RH attended the Joint Workshop on Metadata Registries held at the University of California, Berkeley, CA , 8-10 July 1997. The workshop was convened to discuss and facilitate improved access to and the sharing of data by the harmonising of metadata standards and the development of interoperable metadata registries accessible by the World Wide Web. <URL:http://homes.ukoln.ac.uk/~lisrmh/registry.htm>
