The UK Educational Levels (UKEL) list provides a set of high-level terms to name educational levels across all UK educational sectors.
The list comprises the following terms:
Note that the terms should be used exactly as shown here.
These terms correspond directly with their equivalent terms in the Scottish Curriculum Qualifications Framework (SCQF) - see below.
The UKEL list can be used in IEEE LOM, IMS and qualified DC metadata.
In IEEE LOM metadata, use a term from the UKEL list as a value for the '9.2.2 taxon' element within '9. classification'. '9.1 purpose' should be set to "educational level" and '9.2.1 source' should be set to "UKEL". For example:
<classification>
<purpose>
<source>LOMv1.0</source>
<value>educational level</value>
</purpose>
<taxonPath>
<source>
<string language="x-none">UKEL</string>
</source>
<taxon>
<entry>
<string language="x-none">UK Educational Level 5</string>
</entry>
</taxon>
</taxonPath>
</classification>
In IMS metadata, use a term from the UKEL list as a value for the '9.2.2 taxon' element within '9. classification'. '9.1 purpose' should be set to "Educational Level" and '9.2.1 source' should be set to "UKEL". For example:
<classification>
<purpose>
<source>
<langstring xml:lang="x-none">LOMv1.0</langstring>
</source>
<value>
<langstring xml:lang="x-none">Educational Level</langstring>
</value>
</purpose>
<taxonpath>
<source>
<langstring xml:lang="x-none">UKEL</langstring>
</source>
<taxon>
<entry>
<langstring xml:lang="x-none">UK Educational Level 5</langstring>
</entry>
</taxon>
</taxonpath>
</classification>
In qualified DC metadata, use a term from the UKEL list as a value for the 'dcterms:educationLevel' property. Set the encoding scheme to 'meg:UKEL' (where 'meg' corresponds to the 'http://purl.org/meg/terms/' namespace). For example:
<dcterms:educationLevel xsi:type="meg:UKEL">UK Educational Level 5</dcterms:educationLevel>
Mappings across a range of educational levels is provided in the table below. This table was created by Gerry Graham, Learning and Teaching Scotland.
