Summary
The lectures will be on the theme of providing e-learning.
The following scenario were be used:
Delegates are assumed to be seeking to develop an e-learning strategy for
their scientific organisation. The strategy will address:
- The content areas to be covered.
- A profile of the user groups within the organisation and any specific needs.
- The potential for use of e-learning services provided by external bodies.
- Recommendations on whether the organisation should seek to
implement a local e-learning environment.
- If a local e-learning environment is to be implemented, recommendations
on the requirements needed and examples of tools to be evaluated in more depth.
The following lectures were given:
Session 1a
- What is Learning and What Is E-Learning?, Monday 7 November 2005, 10:00-11:00
- A basic introduction to learning and e-learning theories and concepts
will be given by Melissa Highton [MH]. This will include small group exercises
(people working in pairs) in which the delegates will think about their own learning style.
This will be followed by a brief talk on the different forms of learning and
requirements for successful learning. There will then be a brief summary of how
can technology enhance learning.

Session 2a
- The Role Of Collaborative Technologies, Tuesday 8 November 2005, 08:50-09:50
- In this session Brian Kelly will outline the potential for collaborative technologies in
e-learning. In this session delegates will not only hear about exciting new
technologies such as Blogs, Wikis, VoIP, Podcasting, etc. but will also have
an opportunity to use such technologies.

Session 2b
- Facilitating Collaborative Discussions, Tuesday 8 November 2005, 10:20-11:20
- In this session Melissa Highton will look at some of the human issues related
to the effective use of online discussion systems.

Session 3a
- Key Standards And Technologies, Wednesday 9 November 2005, 08:50-09:50
- In this session Brian Kelly will provide background information of the importance
of standards, specific standards which need to be considered and key application areas
relevant to e-learning.

Session 3b
- E-Learning - The User's Perspective, Wednesday 9 November 2005, 15:50-16:50
- In this talk (and hands-on session?) Melissa Highton will provide delegates
with an opportunity to have hands-on experience of a range of e-learning environments.
Delegates will be encouraged to give their feedback on aspects they found
valuable and areas in which concerns were noted. These experiences will
help to inform delegate's plans for when they consider the development of e-learning.
Session 4a
- Developing An E-Learning Strategy, Thursday 10 November 2005, 11:20-12:20
- In this session Brian Kelly will outline the strategic challenges in deploying e-learning
and provide group exercises in which the delegates will outline the requirements
of an e-learning environment to be deployed within their organisation. The session
will address the question: "How can I persuade my organisation to develop an e-learning strategy?".
Specific examples of e-learning strategies in action will be provided.

Session 4b
- Finding and Using Scientific E-learning Resources, Thursday 10 November 2005, 13:50-14:50
- Many e-learning resources are available on the network. But how do you find
such resources? How do you find quality resources? How do you ensure you have
permissions to use the resources? This session, facilitated by Melissa Highton,
will seek answers to these questions.
