ROADS and Z39.50

Using ZEXI to provide Z39.50 access to ROADS servers

Introduction

ZEXI is a Perl script that can be used as an Isite SCRIPT database to function as a Z39.50 to Whois++ gateway. Isite, developed by CNIDR, provides a Z39.50 server; ZEXI passes queries on to a ROADS server using Whois++. Results are passed back to the Z39.50 client as simple unstructured text records (SUTRS).

Obtaining the Software

Isite is available from <URL:http://www.cnidr.org/ir/isite.html>.

ZEXI is available from <URL:ftp://ftp.ukoln.ac.uk/roads/zoro.pl>

Setting up Zexi

  1. Obtain and install Isite.
  2. Obtain a copy of zoro.pl.
  3. Edit the zoro.pl script to set your ROADS server hostname and Whois++ port and install somewhere (e.g. /opt/bin/zoro.pl).
  4. Configure a new Isite SCRIPT database, referring to the installed version of zoro.pl.
