UKOLN Materials for a Metadata Seminar

This page provides access to materials for use in a Metadata workshop and a timetable which illustrates how the resources could be used.

Please note that notes for the seminar coordinator are being prepared.

Also note that you should read the notes accompaying each document.

The materials provided here were developed by Brian Kelly and Andy Powell of UKOLN for a half-day session on Metadata given at the Institutional Web Management workshop held at Newcastle University on 16 September 1998.

Workshop Outline

Workshop Aims: The aims of the workshop are:

The workshop includes a number of brief presentations, discussions and demonstrations.

In the first part of the workshop the needs for metadata will be identified by group sessions and with brief case studies. The second part of the session concludes with group work looking at the vocabularies needed. Then solutions are described, including metadata standards, metadata applications and tools for managing metadata.

An example for a timetable for use of the materials is given below.

Time Session Comments
1.30-1.40 Introduction Discussion of aims of session
1.40-2.00 Getting to know each other Participants spilt into smaller groups and introduce each other and explain what they want from session
2.00-2.10 Report back Report back from groups and identification of common threads
The Problem
2.10-2.20 Case Study 1 - Resource Discovery Example of current problems with resource discovery
2.20-2.30 Case Study 2 - Resource Management Example of current problems with managing resources
Solutions
2.30-3.15 Group work Several complementary tasks:
  • Defining elements for administrative metadata
  • Using Dublin Core for University entry points
  • Defining vocabularies for subject keywords
The first task covers defining elements for a metadata application. The scond task covers use of a metadata set where the elements have been defined. The third task explores in more details one specific Dublin Core element.
3.15-3.30 Report Back
3.30-3.45 Tea
3.45-4.00 Metadata Standards A summary of metadata standards developments, including Dublin Core, Admin metadata, IMS metadata, RDF, etc.
4.00-4.45 Hands-on Session (or Demonstration) Hands-on session (or demonstration, depending on PC cluster availability) of Metadata Applications (e.g. Nordic Index, Virtual Shoe Museum, Asutalian examples) and Metadata Tools (DC-Dot, Reggie, shareware tools, MS Office tools, etc.)
4.45-5.15 Metadata Tools and Models for My Website Group Discussion
5.00-5.30 "Where To From Here?" Group Discussion
