Relevant Protocols
Number of protocols could be used to implement distributed searching:
- Z39.50 ISO standard. Well-known in library world, but heavy-weight
- whois++ Lightweight IETF standard. Used in several ANR gateways, but not widely deployed
- LDAP Lightweight version of X.500 directory service.
- HTTP/NG? Opportunity to develop new solution using object-oriented technologies based on above experiences?
