• Provides a metadata framework ("machine understandable metadata for the web")
• Based on ideas from content rating (PICS), resource discovery (Dublin Core) and site mapping (MCF)
• Applications include:
  • cataloging resources – resource discovery
  • electronic commerce – intelligent agents
  • digital signatures – content rating
  • intellectual property rights – privacy
