Job Description

1. Purpose

To develop software to integrate a variety of digital repository software platforms with the JISC Information Environment’s Shared Infrastructure Services (SIS). The post will work with repositories which support projects in the Start Up and Enhancement (SUE) strand of the JISC Repositories and Preservation programme.

To prepare documentation to support the integration of SIS in repositories outside the SUE strand of the JISC Repositories and Preservation programme.

To organise and participate in dissemination and consultation activities.

To liaise with projects working in similar areas.

2. Reporting Structure

The post-holder will be a member of the UKOLN Software and Systems Team and will report to the Technical Manager.

The post-holder will work closely with the JISC Programme Managers for the SUE strand and the SIS strand of the Repositories and Preservation Programme who will agree the overall workplan with the Technical Manager.

3. Tasks and Responsibilities

Consultation with JISC projects

• To work with the JISC programme managers in encouraging project managers to engage with the process of integrating SIS into repositories.
• To work with the JISC programme managers and JISC project staff to identify priority areas for integration work and the most suitable technologies or methods to implement them.
• To assist JISC in providing training and workshops for project staff.
• To consult with colleagues involved in JISC projects working in similar areas to explore overlap and exploit synergies.
• To identify and keep in contact with others working in the field nationally and internationally.
• To support programme evaluation and dissemination activity.
• To work with the JISC Programme Manager and the UKOLN Technical Manager to develop the workplan.

Technical development

• To assist in the preparation of scenarios for integration of SIS into repositories to demonstrate and explain to project staff what is possible.
• To develop interfaces between SIS and a variety of repository software platforms.
• To liaise with SIS project staff in the process of integrating their service with repositories.
• To provide technical support to project staff wishing to develop their repository to integrate with SIS.
• To assist JISC in organising practical events to test prototypes or develop software integrations.

Dissemination to the wider community

• To produce "cookbooks" and case studies to enable projects outside the JISC programme to integrate Shared Infrastructure Services
• To prepare Service Usage Models (SUM) for the e-Framework where appropriate.
• To work with the IE testbed to coordinate efforts and dissemination of results.
• To liaise with JISC Services wherever appropriate.
• To contribute to JISC repositories and preservation dissemination activities and other dissemination activities as appropriate e.g. conferences and workshops

This post is funded directly by the JISC, and will be hosted by UKOLN.
