4.6 Bibliographic control

An agreed and generally accepted set of descriptive standards for electronic publications of all kinds, rather than new cataloguing rules, is needed.

Close cooperation between librarians and network specialists is required to address the deficiencies of existing subject access tools and to develop effective methods of organising and structuring the universe of information and data which is held on the networks. An associated requirement is the development of standard interfaces for information retrieval systems, especially in the case of the software supplied with CD-ROMs.
