Introduction
RUDI is a significant multimedia resource for research and teaching in the field of urban design hosted on the Internet. The service provides material on urban design in the Western cultural context using text, high quality colour images, sound and moving picture elements. It is designed to be useful to students, academics and professional practitioners, and has the following ongoing objectives:- to build up a significant hypermedia collection on the topic of urban design, which includes the physical design, management, planning and use of buildings and landscape in terms of their relationship to public and open space;
- to provide material and information of practical value to designers, academics and students, and thereby contribute to a better built environment;
- to be dynamic and modify its content and service features according to user demand.
What does RUDI provide?
- case study based examples of good practice, from individual projects to whole cities;
- original articles and papers;
- full text of Urban Design Quarterly (issue 53 onwards);
- abstracts and details of other urban design journals;
- bibliographies of urban design;
- details of academic, professional and practice organisations;
- diary of events;
- links to other Web sites in urban design, architecture and planning;
- full text searching and browsing facilities;
- an electronic discussion forum.

RUDI acts as a web site for the UK Urban Design Group which supports the project through donation of its journal and Source Book. This is an example of the type of collaboration we wish to establish.
