Introduction
Archives and libraries are the laboratories of historical research. Increased information about these laboratories, and easier access to these and other historical sources will be provided by IHR-INFO.
Description
IHR-INFO, an information server established by the Institute of Historical Research on 9 August 1993 for an experimental period, attracted over one thousand users from all over the world in its first ten days. After discussion with the major source centres for historical research, IHR-INFO has been reshaped and enlarged over the months and is now available on the World Wide Web.Key Deliverables
IHR-Info is:- A BULLETIN BOARD with information on seminars, conferences and training courses
- AN ELECTRONIC PUBLISHER providing bibliographical and other IHR publications free of charge over the Internet
- A VEHICLE TO ELECTRONIC SITES WORLD WIDE: libraries, datasets, other servers
- EASY ACCESS TO ALL INTERNET NAVIGATIONAL TOOLS including the latest WWW searchers
Performance Indicators
Overall Usage: Over 90% of all history departments in HEIs.Minimum number of sources classified per year in Years Two and Three: 1500
Minimum totals of UK usage per week:
Year One: 1000
Year Two: 5000
Year Three: 10000
Minimum provision of both WWW and anonymous login facility: 90% total hours.
Satisfaction level of users: maintain at good to excellent
On-line training courses and video demonstrations will be available by the end of the academic year 1995-96, in addition to the Internet courses currently offered at the Institute of Historical Research.
Participants
As well as the Institute of Historical Research (part of the School of Advanced Study of the University of London), it is hoped to involve all departments which teach history at degree level in the project, in addition to selected intensive test-sites. The five universities which will act as test sites are Aberystwyth, Free University Brussels, Ulster, West of England and York University.
