Introduction
EEVL is a project to build a Gateway for the higher education and research community to facilitate access to high quality information resources in Engineering. It is similar in concept to BUBL (Bulletin Board for Libraries), SOSIG (Social Science Information Gateway), and OMNI (Organising Medical Networked Information), and provides free access via the Internet to Engineering inf ormation.Description
The EEVL Gateway is a World-Wide-Web interface consisting of a Main Database of Engineering Resources, and other related services. The Main Database is a catalogue of Engineering information resources available on the Internet. It provides a central access point to networked Engineering information for the UK higher education and research community, and for engineers generally. Resources added to the EEVL database are selected, catalogued, and classified, by experts, to ensu re that only current, high-quality resources are included. The related services provide access in various ways to engineering information.EEVL collaborates with similar services in other countries, and has connections with UK-based Engineering professional institutions.
As well as providing access to resources, EEVL encourages the creation and provision of new Engineering resources, and gives assistance to non-networked engineering organisations for this purpose. An important part of the Project is the dissemination and promotion of the Gateway amongst UK higher education institutions. At all times throughout the Project emphasis is placed on the user-friendliness of the EEVL service.
Key dates and deliverables
The Project commenced at the beginning of August 1995. By February 1996 a database of core resources was in place. By August 1996 the pilot system had been tested the service to a cross-section of potential users. The Main Database of Engineering Resources went live on 13th September 1996. By April 1997 the Main Database contained details of o ver 2,000 resources. Leaflets, flyers, and other publicity material is widely distributed throughout the higher education community. Promotional/training sessions are held at selected sites.Partners
