The Dublin Core in context

• Dublin Core was originally developed as a tool for the discovery of electronic resources
  • although now extended to physical objects, it is still about resource discovery
  • Other initiatives fulfil similar niche roles, such as rights management metadata, administrative metadata, etc.
  • Some initiatives are far more complex, and encompass many of these roles within a single implementation.
